Letterpress Business Cards

Right before heading back to LA, I had successfully finished my first ever run of business cards using letterpress.

From print to cut to finish, these are all “hand made,” using the Vandercook Universal I proofing press, which is pretty much an analog copy machine, that dates back to the 60’s and was used to proof layouts for newspapers and other forms of print.

For the last few months I’ve been taking continuing ed classes at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. With this, I have convenient access to their incredible facilities while also expanding my range of printmaking techniques. The most recent course taken was Letterpress, in which we learned traditional printing using both wood and metal type, as well as new techniques such as photo polymer plates (a more customizable technique, which was used for this particular project.)

Hello Tumblr, it’s been awhile since I’ve actually posted here. I admit I’ve been cheating and using instagram to do all of my tumblring.

Anyways, so I recently started this mini project of mine. I’ve been going to several live music shows since my time in New York, all of which have been amazing btw. I feel like now taking photos/videos and instagraming aren’t enough to preserve the amazing memories of these performances, especially from some of my favorite bands. So I came up with the idea, for portfolio sake, as well as conceptual practice, (and hopefully some sort of possible recognition from the bands) to create illustrations based off the shows that I see live. I’ve started by creating mock-merch for myself and some of my friends. Because I have access to a printmaking shop, I figure I might as well take full advantage.

About 2 weeks ago, My friend Dorothy and I went to see Local Natives at the Bowery Ballroom in the Lower East Side. This was a pretty big deal for me 1. because they are an LA-based band and 2. I’ve never got a chance to see them live (tickets were always selling out)

So at first my initial approach to this project, was to create the illustration(s) after seeing the band live, based off the experience, mood, etc of the night. Dorothy had instead suggested I print a few shirts beforehand that we can wear at the show, and maybe gain some sort of promotional benefit. Having just a few days before the show, I had quickly cranked out a simple design and was luckily able to print the tees just in time.

As far as the design goes, I had based this idea from their new music video of their single “Breakers.” One of the characters in the video (Their drummer, Matt Frazier) was wearing an astronaut helmet, which led me to create this “abstracted” crescent helmet shape, fixed on top of this walking character. Being a big fan of split-fountain printing (using multiple colors to create a gradient) I had sampled the colors from the “Breakers” single cover art to tie in with the Breakers theme.

All in all, this project seems to be off on a great start, although I didn’t get them to sign it, maybe with enough reblogs and reposts, hopefully it’ll eventually reach them in cyberspace!
